A Celebration with Ranunculus and Kitties

Just a few minutes ago we got an email from our real estate agent letting us know that our offer on the house was accepted! Yay! We are so thrilled and are looking forward to getting all of the contingency investigations finished up so we can complete the sale!

To celebrate, I thought I would post some more beautiful photos of ranunculus flowers. I took these photos this afternoon and they feature some flowers I got at the market today (they were on sale!) There are a lot of them because I just can't resist ranunculus and I can't pick my favorite photos of them!

Leila was very curious about the flowers.

The American Dream

About a week ago I heard an interview on NPR about the economic crises and how it has affected home owners, potential home buyers, and renters. The expert who was being interviewed who, I believe, may have been a professor at Harvard or Columbia (sadly I can't find the transcript or I would provide more accurate details), was of the opinion that, over the past few decades, the government has propagated the mistaken idea that the "American Dream" is to own a house and some land around it. I hadn't heard about the government promoting that idea but I did hear about it in school growing up. The expert seemed to think that there was no reason to own a house when renting is so convenient and hassle free. Instead of having a nation whose dream is to buy and own a bit of property, his opinion was that our national goal and dream should be to find a good job and work hard at it our entire lives. (I wish I could find the transcript and quote it directly!)

That interview definitely made me think a bit. I have never yet owned a house or any land and I have been renting ever since I got out of college but I certainly have held the dream of owing a little house with a nice piece of property. When I was little, my visions of adulthood definitely involved a house that my husband and I would own, never did I dream of renting a house or apartment for my entire life.

Quite likely, my dreams and ideals were partly based on my childhood experiences. When my parents married, my mother moved into the house my father had bought a few years prior to their wedding. That little brown house was the one they took me home to from the hospital and the one my father was constantly trying to improve. My first Christmas my parents bought a live tree and after the holiday planted it outside in their yard. A couple of years later, with my brother on the way, my parents started looking for a bigger house, father from town, where they could raise their growing family. They found a beautiful white house on the top of a hill surrounded by Douglas fir forests. My father immediately fell in love with it but my mother thought it was awfully far from town. My father eventually convinced my mom that with a little bit of hard work and paint it could be perfect for our family and they made the move. It has now been over 24 years since they bought the house and my mother is still living there.

As a child, I loved playing in the large grassy yard and dark forest adjacent to our property. In the summer my brother and I would run through sprinklers and help with the gardening and in the winter we would splash in mud puddles and jump in piles of leaves.

The summer before my second grade year we moved down to Eugene, Oregon. My mother had been accepted at The University of Oregon to study for her Masters in Linguistics. We rented out our house to another family while we were away and we ourselves rented a small student housing apartment. The first few weeks in Eugene were very hot and I remember my mother giving us delicious sticky popsicles in flavors like banana, root-beer, and lime to help us endure the heat. Despite the fun of adventuring to a new place, I quickly grew very tired of the tiny apartment living and longed to return to our big house and yard up in Bellingham. We lived down in Eugene in the small apartment for 3 years and by the time we moved back I, in my 5th grade mind, was firmly convinced that renting and living in apartments was no fun at all and something to be avoided at all costs.

However, now that I have grown up a bit and have experienced life in the Bay Area I am not nearly as opposed to renting as I once was. Woodley and I are thrilled to be renting our current house and I grow to love it more and more every day. For me to be happy though I know I need to live close to nature in a place where I can look the window and see trees and grass and flowers. Fortunately we were able to find a house to rent that fulfilled that goal.

For awhile though Woodley has been feeling that we should have a house of our own. Since houses in the Bay Area are so expensive and since we have talked of spending the summers up in Bellingham, we started looking up there for a house. A little over a year ago we first saw a cute little blue house on Lake Whatcom. As the months went by we continued to see it online and noticed that it wasn't selling. Then, this past December, Woodley arranged for us to have a tour of the house when we were up in Bellingham for Christmas. We liked it best out of all the houses around Whatcom County that we looked at and went back up in March to have it inspected.

Earlier this week, we got a call from our real estate agent who wanted to let us know that another offer came in on the house. They wanted to give us a chance to make an offer also though since we had been looking at it for so long. So, the past few days have been a bit of a whirlwind! Our real estate agent put together the offer for us on Wednesday. Yesterday, after a few frantic hours of searching, we finally found an attorney to look over the documents for us. We signed it and submitted the offer via fax yesterday afternoon. At this moment, we are anxiously awaiting news about it which should come by 9pm tonight. It is very exciting but also very scary.

It would be so lovely if it worked out for us to buy the house. It is so charming and is right on Lake Whatcom! It even has a little boat house right on the edge of the lake. :) I am dreaming of donning my apron this coming summer and spending my days canning hand picked strawberries and blueberries in it's little kitchen! Let's hope those dreams come true!

Lilacs

The lilacs have come out again! On the way up our long driveway there is a beautiful patch of meadow filled with around 10 very old and tall lilac trees. I simply adore lilacs and it is heavenly to walk down the driveway these days! Every time I see their purple blooms it reminds me of the first time Woodley and I drove up our driveway, about a year ago.

We were just a few months away from our wedding and we had been searching for several months for the perfect house to rent as our first home together. We hoped to find something that felt sort of rural but that was still close enough to the Bay Area for Woodley to commute to work easily. Each day we would pour over Craigslist looking for anything remotely close to what we hoped to find. We looked at a few houses but for one reason or another they weren't quite right.

Then one day we saw it! An ad for an old farmhouse in Los Gatos with a bit of land and near a public park. I knew the moment I read it that it was the house for us. We first saw the ad about 45 minutes after it was posted and emailed the landlords immediately to arrange to see it. The following afternoon found us driving down to Los Gatos and up the steep windy road that leads to what is now our driveway. As we drove up the driveway for the first time, I looked out the window and immediately fell in love with the patch of blooming lilacs. The house was pretty torn up since it was undergoing a fairly extensive remodel but we knew we wanted it. Later that week everything was finalized and we were thrilled to have found the perfect spot!

It's hard to believe it's almost a year later. Of course, we didn't actually start living in the house until we got back from our honeymoon in July, but it still feels like we have been here a whole year now. While I was working out in the garden this afternoon I couldn't stop thinking about how grateful I am to be able to live in such a beautiful part of the world! When I was little, I loved spending time outside in our yard and the woods around our house. I think I had forgotten how nice it is just to be outdoors in nature without having to go anywhere or do anything. Just being outside for a long stretch of time listening to the birds singing and feeling the wind blowing gives me such pleasure! With Woodley's help I was even able to finish the other two tops for the planter boxes. Now I just need to figure out where to plant what!

When I finished in the garden, I picked some lilacs for our dining room table. They are so lovely! I'll have to take a picture of them tomorrow morning after I charge our camera battery.

Back Again to Sunny California

We returned from our trip to Portland, OR and Bellingham, WA late last night and were greeted by a gloriously sunny day today. The trip was lots of fun and we were able to a bunch of friends during our brief travels.

After the weekend doula training in Portland, we left late Sunday night and drove up to Bellingham, arriving around midnight. My mother had waited up for us and greeted us warmly. We were quite tired after our long drive so we went straight to bed.

Every time we have visited Bellingham in the past 2 years it has snowed. This is very usual since during my childhood years we were thrilled to get even an inch of snow once a year. Woodley and I drove up for Thanksgiving 2 years ago and were stuck there for a week during a huge snowstorm. Next, we were up there in April and we were amazed when the big fluffy flakes started floating down. And then, this past Christmas, it snowed so much we had to spend a night at the Tulalip Casino on our way home from the airport in Seattle (that was something I never thought I would have done!). I thought for sure there wouldn't be any snow this time - there hadn't been any snow in the forecast and it was March after all. As we drove into town on Sunday night the weather was quite cold and it was overcast. Woodley looked at me and said, "What do you want to bet it snows tonight?"  I laughed and said I guessed it was possible it might snow. We didn't really think it would though.

Boy were we surprised when we woke up Monday morning and saw an inch or so of snow on everything! Once again, we brought the snow! We woke up a bit late and, despite the snow, headed directly over to the nearby house that we are considering buying. We had arranged to have an inspector come to look over the property so we could find out if there were any major concerns with the house. We have been thinking about getting our own place for awhile now and we have had our eye on this particular property over a little over a year. It hasn't sold yet and we keep coming back to it. They recently dropped the price (again) so we decided it would be worth it to go ahead with the inspection. Unfortunately, the snow made it difficult for the inspector to access the roof and some of the other areas but overall it went well. It was amazing to sit in the living room of the house and watch the snowflakes flutter down outside!

After the inspection, we hurried across town to meet up with Katie for lunch. It was so nice to see her and to spend a little bit of time catching up.

After Katie had to go back to work, Woodley and I explored Cornwall Park, The ReStore, and the Grizzly Tools showroom. That evening we had a great dinner at home with my mom, Katie, Jason, and Phil. After dinner my mom taught us all how to pay Pit. It is such a fun game and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good party game. It works well with three to eight players.

Tuesday dawned clear and cold. The sunlight was brilliant and it was a gorgeous day out! Woodley and I hung out around my mom's house for the morning and then went for a walk in Boulevard Park. The sunshine on the bay was gorgeous and it was so fun to check out all of the sailboats in moored off of the shore. We walked from the park over to the Colophon Cafe in Fairhaven where my mom met us and we ate a yummy lunch. Next, we headed back over to the prospective house where we met up with Sasha, Katie to show them the property. I had so much fun showing them the house and yard and I really do believe I am falling in love with that house.

Before Woodley and I headed up to Bellingham, Sasha, Katie and I had planned to have a "girls night" on Tuesday evening. As things turned out, we didn't exactly have our night just to ourselves, but it was still a super fun evening. We once again had dinner, all together, at my mom's house. Next we went over to Julie and Greg's new house (they just finished remodeling it and moved in a little over a week ago) to see the updates. It was amazing! My mom and Woodley went along with us for that. After seeing the house, we decided to all go bowling together! Since it was late, we played only one game, but it was great fun! Woodley won. :)

Wednesday morning (yesterday), we woke up early and hit the road around 8am. We stopped in Seattle and had breakfast with Nicola at a delightful little Greek restaurant called The Continental. The food was fabulous and just what we needed to energize us for the long drive ahead of us. Nicola and I split the Greek Pancakes and a special breakfast of rice with sauteed mushrooms, scrambled eggs, and feta. (Not a combination I would have come up with on my own, but oh so tasty!) After that we headed back to I-5 and drove all the way down to Los Gatos. We arrived around 2am and headed straight for bed, exhausted! It was such a fun trip though and I'm so glad we drove and went together. It makes Bellingham seem so close when we can drive home in 1 long day.
